Description

danmu_api before 1.21.7 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to modify server environment configuration when the default TOKEN is used and ADMIN_TOKEN is unset. Attackers can send POST requests to /api/env/set, /api/env/add, or /api/env/del to set ADMIN_TOKEN, lock out operators, redirect OTHER_SERVER or PROXY_URL for SSRF, and trigger redeployment.

Detail

The danmu_api is a popular back-end solution used in various online platforms for managing and delivering dynamic content such as comments and feedback in real-time. It is commonly utilized by developers and administrators looking to efficiently manage audience interaction features in their applications. Designed for seamless integration, danmu_api is widely adopted for purposes such as entertainment, live broadcasts, or any digital environment where real-time interaction is crucial. The product's primary function is enhancing user interaction and engagement, making it a critical component in modern web applications. Therefore, maintaining its security integrity is paramount to prevent unauthorized misuse and maintain application reliability.

The unauthorized access vulnerability identified in danmu_api presents a severe risk due to improper authentication mechanism for certain API endpoints. This vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it leverages default token configurations, allowing unauthenticated users to gain administrative privileges. Such a weakness can lead to unauthorized manipulations of crucial server configurations, posing a significant threat to system security. Unauthenticated users can potentially modify or misuse server settings, perform malicious activities, and cause a massive breach of trust. Understanding the mechanisms of this vulnerability is essential for implementing effective security measures and patches.

The technical details of this vulnerability reveal that the attack occurs due to incorrect default token use and the absence of an admin token in the configuration. This means specific API endpoints are left exposed without restrictive access control, leading to potential unauthorized access. Specifically, attackers target the API configuration endpoints, exploiting the weak authentication to execute commands that may disrupt the system or result in unauthorized information exposure. Individual endpoints with misconfigurations become the gateway for initiating this unauthorized access. It's critical to understand these entry points to prevent future exploitation and apply necessary patches.

Exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to a variety of severe impacts, including unauthorized access to server configurations and potential service disruptions. Attackers might lock out authorized users, causing significant downtime and operational disruption. The server availability can be severely impacted, leading to unwanted triggers such as Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) or re-deployment, hindering the service's ability to perform as intended. Moreover, these unauthorized changes could damage the server's integrity, creating a wide array of security challenges and potentially leading to data breaches or loss.

Solution Advice
  • Update to danmu_api version 1.21.7 or later to ensure the application does not rely on default tokens for authentication.
  • Perform regular security audits and code reviews to identify and rectify potential weaknesses in authentication mechanisms.
  • Implement robust access control measures to safeguard API endpoints, preventing unauthorized access.
  • Consider implementing additional security layers such as two-factor authentication for administrative operations.
  • Monitor server logs for unusual access patterns to detect unauthorized attempts early.
