Description

Paisa before 0.7.8 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the GetFile, GetSheet, DeleteBackups, and DeleteSheetBackups handlers that lets unauthenticated attackers read files and delete backups through ../ sequences in file names. Attackers can send crafted names to the editor file and delete_backups endpoints to read any server-readable file and remove backup files outside the journal or sheets directory.

Detail

Paisa is an open source personal finance manager used by individuals and small businesses for tracking expenses, income, and other financial data. Developed by Ananthakumaran, it provides a convenient way to manage personal finances electronically, offering features to track transactions and handle data in numerous currencies. Widely adopted by tech-savvy users across various platforms, this software allows users to maintain a clear overview of their financial situation. Users can create detailed financial reports, understand spending habits, and optimize their budgets accordingly. Available for multiple operating systems, Paisa enhances cost management efficiency through its user-friendly interface and comprehensive feature set.

The path traversal vulnerability identified in Paisa version below 0.7.8 allows unauthenticated attackers to manipulate file paths by exploiting inadequate sanitization in multiple handlers, enabling read access to arbitrary files. Such vulnerabilities pose significant data security concerns as they permit unintended file access and manipulation. This specific flaw resides in critical functions like GetFile and DeleteBackups, undermining the system's security by allowing access to insecure file paths. As a common web vulnerability, it is dangerous, especially in applications handling sensitive data, and requires immediate attention. Proper mitigation involves understanding the inherent threat it poses to the application and resolving the sanitization inefficiencies in file handling.

The vulnerability revolves around improper handling and sanitization of filenames in API endpoints that perform file operations, specifically noted in GetFile, GetSheet, DeleteBackups, and DeleteSheetBackups. By using directory traversal sequences such as ../, malicious users can exploit this to traverse the file system and access sensitive files, like /etc/passwd. Critical to the application's security, the lack of effective input validation allows attackers to bypass preset directory restrictions. Addressing this requires reviewing and patching these endpoints to enforce strict filename and path validation. A better-designed file access mechanism implemented in these APIs would negate the risks associated with such file operation vulnerabilities.

Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to sensitive files, potentially exposing user information or the application's critical files. Such exploitation could lead to data breaches, allowing attackers to obtain confidential information and eavesdrop on private files. Moreover, the attack can cause operational disruptions if critical application files are altered, leading to unauthorized actions or the deletion of essential data backups. Unauthorized access undermines user trust and could cause compliance violations if sensitive user data is affected. Preventing these possible attacks is vital to maintaining application integrity and protecting user data.

Solution Advice
  • Update to version 0.7.8 or later to patch the vulnerability.
  • Implement proper validation mechanisms to sanitize file paths in the application.
  • Conduct regular security audits and tests to ensure that no new vulnerabilities are introduced.
  • Adopt a principle of least privilege for file access to minimize the impact of potential vulnerabilities.
  • Implement logging and monitoring to detect any unusual file access activities promptly.
