Exploitable remotely over the internet · no authentication required.

The UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.26.4 via the UpdraftPlus_Remote_Communications_V2::wp_loaded function. This is due to insufficient validation of the remote communications message format, where signature verification can be bypassed and unchecked decryption return values collapse to a predictable all-zero encryption key. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to forge arbitrary RPC commands and run them as the connected administrator, such as uploading and activating a malicious plugin, which ultimately leads to remote code execution.

Detail

The UpdraftPlus WP Backup & Migration Plugin is a widely used WordPress plugin designed for site backups and migrations. It's utilized by website administrators to securely back up their sites and facilitate easy restoration when needed. The plugin supports scheduling automatic backups and saving to various remote storage locations. Users find it beneficial because it simplifies the process of site migration and backup management without needing technical expertise. However, vulnerabilities in such popular plugins can pose significant risks if exploited by attackers. Ensuring these plugins are secure and up-to-date is crucial to maintain site integrity.

The vulnerability in question relates to an authentication bypass in the UpdraftPlus WP Backup & Migration Plugin. This flaw arises from insufficient validation within the UpdraftPlus_Remote_Communications_V2 component, potentially allowing unauthenticated attackers to gain administrative access. Such issues are categorized under critical security concerns due to the potential for unauthorized access to sensitive operations. Understanding and addressing this kind of vulnerability is crucial for protecting WordPress sites using this particular plugin. This scanner is designed to identify such bypass vulnerabilities efficiently, ensuring quick remediation actions can be taken.

Technical details involve the mishandling of remote communication protocols within the plugin, leading to unauthorized remote procedure calls. Specifically, the UpdraftPlus plugin fails to properly authenticate some functions within its communication system, therefore letting attackers execute arbitrary RPC commands. This failure of authentication can be exploited by crafting specific payloads that take advantage of these weaknesses. It is vital for site administrators to be aware of this vulnerability and check for its presence in their installations.

Exploiting this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands as an admin, potentially leading to full site compromise. If left unpatched, malicious actors may gain access to sensitive information or take control of a site's backend. This could result in data leaks, defacement, or even inclusion in botnets for further malicious activities. Preventing such exploitation by promptly patching the vulnerability is essential to protect the site's users and maintain trust.
