Exploitable remotely over the internet · no authentication required.

The TranslatePress – Translate Multilingual sites with AI Translation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.1 via the 'trp_get_translations_regular' AJAX action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the raw administrator password-reset URL — including the plaintext reset key and login parameters stored in the translation dictionary table — enabling full administrator account takeover. This vulnerability is only exploitable when automatic string saving is enabled (the default setting) and the target administrator's profile locale is set to a published secondary language, as these conditions cause the password-reset URL to be persisted as a translatable string in the secondary-language dictionary table.

Detail

The scanner is designed to detect security vulnerabilities within the TranslatePress WordPress plugin, a widely used multilingual solution for WordPress websites. TranslatePress, developed by Cozmoslabs, is popular among website administrators and developers who require translation services for content management systems. It allows users to translate entire pages in the front-end interface and supports multiple languages. This plugin is especially favorable for large-scale websites needing to cater to diverse linguistic user bases. By facilitating straightforward language translations, it enhances the accessibility and reach of WordPress-powered sites globally. However, like many widely used plugins, it also presents potential security risks if not adequately managed and updated.

The vulnerability exploited in this case enables unauthenticated account takeover, a severe security flaw. It specifically impacts the TranslatePress plugin for WordPress, allowing attackers to extract password-reset URLs. The exploit arises from a flaw in the AJAX action 'trp_get_translations_regular', which saves sensitive information that can be accessed without authentication. This vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it does not require attacker credentials or advanced skills. Successful exploitation can lead to unauthorized access to administrative controls and potentially complete control over the affected WordPress site's administrator account.

Technical details reveal that the vulnerability exists due to the improper handling of the AJAX action within the plugin. The endpoint '/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php' can be manipulated to extract sensitive information like password-reset URLs. The parameters associated with this action, specifically the 'security' and 'language' parameters, are leveraged in the attack. By sending specific requests to the translation endpoints, attackers can retrieve reset keys, which, when combined with RESTful actions, allow the bypass of authentication measures. Such technical exploits underscore the critical need for stringent security testing and regular updates to avoid similar vulnerabilities.

When exploited, this vulnerability can have significant implications, including unauthorized administrative access, data breaches, and control over the website's operations. It can result in the leakage of sensitive user information, modification or deletion of website content, and the potential for the site to be used as a platform for further attacks. In addition to the immediate security concerns, successful exploitation could harm the website's reputation, resulting in loss of trust by users and clients. Furthermore, the website could be banned by search engines or blacklisted if used for malicious activities. Hence, addressing this vulnerability is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the affected systems.

Solution Advice
Remediation:
  • Update the TranslatePress WordPress plugin to a version later than 3.3.1 or use the latest available version.
  • Regularly monitor plugin updates and apply patches as they become available from the vendor.
  • Implement strict access controls on the backend to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Enable logging and monitoring to detect potential unauthorized activities promptly.
  • Consider using security plugins that offer additional layers of protection against common vulnerabilities.
